Catholic Schools Office at 1310 West Main Street, Lexington, KY 40508-2048 US - Science Lessons Become Alive

Science Lessons Become Alive

What has over 380 arms and legs and loves to dig in the dirt?  Give up?  How about 190 students from St. Camillus Academy in Corbin, Kentucky.  These dedicated youngsters were beneficiaries of multiple PRIDE (Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment) grants over the past five years.  With the help of dedicated parents, volunteers and teaching staff, the St. Camillus grounds have evolved into a working environmental laboratory.  To date, St. Camillus has received $19,450 in PRIDE grants.

The PRIDE projects currently include:

                      A green house

Butterfly Garden - outdoor classroom and meditation garden

                      Bird Sanctuary

                      Nature Trail

Two tracking boxes - students place food in the boxes and check for animal tracks

Three wetlands - attracting local deer and other wildlife

St. Camillus has also been blessed this past year by receiving a $200 grant from the National Garden Association to create a vegetable garden. The bounty will be offered to St. William parish for their monthly gathering of senior citizen.
